Suzanne Bontempo from Our Water Our World Presents:
How to Protect Your Garden Against Drought and Pests

Monday, July 26 from 10 am to 11:30 am

Here in California, droughts are part of our natural weather cycles. Droughts can increase the number of pests in our gardens. We welcome Suzanne Bontempo from OWOW (Our Water Our World) to speak about Summer Gardening Pest Management. She will tell us ways to help protect our plants from pests during extensive drought conditions.

When drought conditions persist for long periods of time, it can harm plants in a number of ways. Lack of water limits a plant’s ability to produce food, and stressed plants can release chemicals that can attract pests. Excessive heat can accelerate the reproduction time of pests. Learn ways to protect your plants in this presentation.

Suzanne Bontempo works as an environmental educator, teaching the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for sustainable, eco-friendly pest management around the home and garden. Suzanne, owner of Plant Harmony and program manager for Our Water Our World was recognized for excellence in her field, winning the 2013 IPM Innovators Award.

President’s Message

by Fred Rentschler, WC Seniors Club President

Now that the state of California has relaxed many Covid restrictions, it is time to think about returning to the Senior Center. Our target date is September after Labor Day. When the Center reopens, there will be some new procedures. Everyone who attends a drop-in group meeting will need to be a member of the Walnut Creek Seniors Club. And the drop-in fees of $2 per meeting will be mandatory, instead of optional because we will be paying a room rental fee to The City for the first time.

You can help us with the transition by joining the WC Seniors Club now. This way you can avoid delays and long lines waiting to fill out membership forms when the center reopens.

We are looking for a volunteer for each drop-in group to collect drop-in fees and manage the sign-in sheet. If you would like to be an assistant, let your group leader know. Some groups will need a new leader. If you are interested in becoming a drop-in group leader, let us know by emailing wcseniorsnews@gmail.com
