Walking Buddies

Photo Above: Twelve Walking Buddies participated in the hike via Larkey Park on May 18, which we described in a recent WCSC newsletter. The picture was taken at the turnaround point by Dan Crowley.

by Rolando Salazar

On Tuesday, Sept. 7, Walking Buddies will walk from and through Markham Arboretum via a trail that follows Galindo Creek and continues into Newhall Park. We will return along the same trail for an approximate 4 mile walk. Our group has done this walk many times in the past and it is an easy and enjoyable outing.

Markham Arboretum is a 16 acre park maintained by the City of Concord. It has about 45 different species of trees. It was originally private property owned by a Concord family that planted many of the trees and donated it to the City of Concord.

We will also be walking through Newhall Community Park which is composed of 126 acres. Galindo Creek goes through the park and there are ponds along the creek, picnic areas, bocce courts, a fenced dog exercising area, athletic playing fields and a Vietnam Memorial at the top of a knoll inside the park. The paved and dirt paths are excellent for our walk.
Bring evidence of vaccination.

For more information contact Rolando Salazar at rsalazar94598@gmail.com.

Your Membership Card

Dear WCSC Member,

Starting Thursday September 9th, the Civic Park Community Center will be open for public hours from Monday through Thursday 10:00am to 2:00pm. During this time there will be drop-in programs for Walnut Creek Seniors Club members. For a schedule of drop-in programs, please check the WCSC website at https://tinyurl.com/a2fd79e6 or email the club at wcseniorsnews@gmail.com.

As part of the reopening process, new this year each WCSC member will have a membership pass card that is printed with your specific barcode and name. This pass card will be used to check in for each on-site drop-in program. You will be able to load your card with “drop in punches” either online through your membership account in PerfectMind or with cash/check at the community center Monday – Thursday from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Each punch is worth $2 which is the cost of dropping in to the WCSC programs. You will be able to “load your card” using a credit card and be able to apply increments of 5 passes ($10), 10 passes ($20), 20 passes ($40). This new system allows members to pay for drop-in programs with their card instead of having to always carry cash. This new system will also allow for us to help track and provide attendance numbers to the WCSC Board. Another great feature is that if you lose your card, you don’t lose the punch value on your card. We will be able to reprint your card for you. If you are worried about losing your card, we have an option where you can keep your card at the center, and we check you in each time you come. Please note, the first time we replace your card, it’s free but after that, you will need to pay a $5 replacement fee to help cover the staffing and supplies cost.

If you are only attending Zoom Drop-In programs, the punch-in card is not necessary at this time since you are not on-site.

If you know that you are going to come to the Center on Thursday Sept 9th or want to attend an in-person drop-in program, please take a moment to fill out this quick form so that we may print your card ahead of time and reduce your waiting time.

Fill out form here: https://forms.gle/GsYCe2aKaJNSKedcA

If you have questions about the process of filling out the form, please call 925-943-5852 or email cpcc@walnut-creek.org

You are NOT YET ALLOWED to purchase punch passes online. Once you are allowed, we will email you to let you know you can add these to your account.

If you have questions about what programs are returning or the schedule, please contact the senior club directly at wcseniorsnews@gmail.com or by calling 925-943-5851

Thank you,

Civic Park Community Center Team
