President’s Message

by Fred Rentschler, WC Seniors Club President

This month I can finally give you some concrete information on the reopening of the Seniors Center and new procedures that will be in place. First, The Seniors Center will open on Thursday, September 9th. The Center hours will be from 10 am to 2 pm, Monday through Thursday. During business hours there will be a City employee at the front desk to assist you. The new hours are due to budget constraints forced on the City by the Covid epidemic.

Also, with the current Covid guidelines still in effect, before you can enter the building The City will have a simple health screening questionnaire that you can access from your smart phone or answer in person. There will be no restrictions in the building for social distancing but masks may still be required in the building depending on the regulations still in effect in September. Things will be different but if we all show some patience, we can work this out fairly easily.

There will also be some changes in the way The Club does business. The drop-in fee for group meetings that used to be optional will be raised to $2 and will be required this year. The major change will be The Club going to an electronic system that will issue membership cards with a bar code to everyone that will allow you to enter the building and prepay the group drop-in fee. This is a complicated system and, to be honest, there will be a learning curve, both for you and us until we get the system working smoothly. So again, expect changes, expect some confusion and expect a return to normalcy soon.

How to Get Help with Returning to the Senior Center

by Kat Reisinger
Program Manager, Walnut Creek Recreation

Our goal is to work with the Seniors Club to reduce the amount of bumps along the way as you return to the Senior Center and to provide the high quality services and programs that you are used to. We are excited to see everybody on site. Stay tuned for emails from the City that will outline how to get your new membership card as well as pay for drop-in programs.

If you need assistance in returning to the Senior Center, you can call the senior hotline at 925-943-5852 and reach a staff member. If you leave a message, it will be returned promptly.

You can also reach staff at cpcc@walnut-creek.org. If you have general questions about programs and events or want to register for a call, you can call the customer service line at 925-295-1490 seven days a week from 9 am – 4 pm.

Cottage Gardens, From Traditional to Modern

Monday, August 23 from 10 am to 11:30 am

Have you wondered what makes a garden a cottage garden? Robin Wolf will use vivid photographs to explore the design elements of cottage gardens, including curves, massing plants, creating height, and visual elements that act as anchors. Are cottage gardens really a random jumble of plants or are they planned to look that way? We will see some restored historic cottage gardens that are now on the British National Trust, including the family home of Anne Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare, and Beatrix Potter’s garden around her cottage. These gardens give us the opportunity to point out design features. Then we will turn to drought-tolerant plants for a California cottage garden that can replace the water-thirsty plants of the traditional cottage garden.

Civic Park Gardening Opportunities
Gardening opportunities in Civic Park through the Seniors Club include:

1. Planting a small garden in the back patio of the Senior Center after the Senior Center reopens.

2. Planting more native plants in the new Garden Strip adjacent to the Senior Center starting in August.

3. “Sprucing up” and weeding the first half of the Creek Walk starting in August.

This work will be done on a drop-in basis so you can come to as many or as few one-hour sessions as you like. The gardening work will be done on Tuesday mornings. if you might be interested, email the newsletter at wcseniorsnews@gmail.com (seniors is plural) or click here to email Robin and let us know which project interests you.

Walking Buddies

Take a Hike Where Egrets Have Been Spotted
In August you can hike with the Walking Buddies and expect to see a number of birds. The route winds up on a Water District service road that runs parallel to Grayson Creek. Rolando Salazar says, “One day while hiking along Grayson Creek, I came within less than 10 feet of a Snowy White Egret along the side of the creek who showed no concern of my being there. I have a brochure from the Audubon Society that shows all the birds that are commonly found along the creek. There are a lot of them, so we should keep our eyes open”.

The hike along Grayson Creek starts at Walden Park on Civic Drive. We will walk as far as W. Hookson Rd. in Pleasant Hill and return the same way we came. It is a different and nice walk. The trails are all paved and flat. I clocked the walk at about an hour and 25 minutes, so it is about 4 miles total. We welcome all new hikers
